American Theorem wins the G1 Bing Crosby in 2022 at Del Mar. Benoit Photo.

AMERICAN THEOREM had been training fabulously prior to his first start at Del Mar on 8/31/19 and lived up to those expectations with an impressive score over a much hyped field. Looking every bit like a future Kentucky Derby prospect after his 2nd in the G1 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita in October of 2019. The heartache of a shin injury dashed Breeders’ Cup plans as well as Kentucky Derby start in 2020 and pretty much the entire year. 2021 wasn’t much different, but finally he patience of his connections, owner Kretz Racing LLC and his trainer George Papaprodromou was rewarded in 2022 with a a bang up allowance win on Jan 2 to start the year, followed by wins in the Triple Bend G2 and the Bing Crosby G1. Looking forward to his 2024 season with the Breeders Cup at Del Mar his goal.  View more news about American Theorem.

Cabo Spirit wins the Eddie Logan Stake
CABO SPIRIT winning the Eddie Logan stake at Santa Anita in Jan of 2022 (Benoit Photo)

Owner Kretz Racing LLC was all in on this beautiful son of Pioneerof the Nile at the 2021 OBS April 2yr old sale. Turned over to trainer George Papaprodromou, he trained and showed promise during the summer of his 2yr old year at Del Mar on the dirt but a switch to the grass got his maiden win during the Del Mar fall meet, that was then followed up with a placing in the G3 Cecil B. De Mile Stake on the Breeders Cup undercard. It did not take long after that for his first stakes win to come, taking the Listed $100,000 Eddie Logan at Santa Anita to bring in 2022 on Jan 2. A switch back to the dirt in the G3 Robert B. Lewis resulted in a credible 2nd place finish, but a follow up dirt start in the G2 San Felipe indicated he may be better on the turf. A solid 3rd in the California Derby at Golden Gate proved that, followed by a 2nd in the Cinema Stake, a win in the G3 La Jolla Handicap and another win in the G2 Twilight Derby then followed. In 2023 he picked up a 3rd in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile G1. Looking forward to 2024.

Gayle Van Leer did the mating that produced this filly for her breeder Ken D’Oyen. Like many small breeders that need to stretch their budgets, looking for value in the under $10,000 range is a constant. This sire never became hugely popular but he did work well with this mare and the results speak for themselves. This filly sold as a yearling for $40,000 off a $7,500 stud fee which made her breeder very happy. She was subsquently sold for $165,000 as a 2yr old to her current connections. She has now won 4 stakes including the Sorrento Stakes G2 and the Monrovia Stakes G3. She has also placed in the Clement L Hirsch G1, the Great Lady M Stk G2 and the Chillingworth Stk G3. Congratulations to her connections! Keep winning!

MOOSE MITCHELL is owned and bred by long time GVLTS client R L Stables. “Moose” as he’s known around the barn is quite the handful, but he can sure run and as he matures he’s just getting better. GVLTS purchased his granddam as a yearling in 2007. She only made one start but it was a winning one. She showed us enough talent that it was decided to keep her to try as a broodmare. One of her mates was City Zip and from that mating we got Sunrise Avenue, the dam of MOOSE MITCHELL. Sunrise also showed talent and shortly before her first race she was injured and retired. Breeding is a game of patience and finally it paid off with Moose. Now stakes placed twice, we are looking forward to 2024.

RED FLAG

Red Flag by Tamarkuz out of Surrender
Red Flag at Del Mar winning the 7f G3 Bob Hope Stake (Benoit photo)

RED FLAG made a splash breaking his maiden for owners Tina and Jerry Moss and trainer John Sherrifs in the fall of 2020. He then skipped forward into Kentucky Derby contention with an easy 7 1/4 win in the 7f G3 Bob Hope stakes at Del Mar in his next start. A third as the heavy favorite on 2/27/20 in the listed Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita, knocked him off the Derby trail. Multiple layoffs followed.   GVLTS purchased his dam Surrender on behalf of Elaine Macpherson. Red Flag’s stakes win now makes Surrender a two time stakes producer for Macpherson. She also produced Surrender Now.  Read a pedigree profile on RED FLAG by the Paulick Report here.

Long time client Larry Samovar retired from the breeding side of the business and wanted a good California bred for some racing fun with his long time trainer Eddie Truman. That result became PROFESSORS’ PRIDE who won first time out and kept going from there in the fall of her 2yr old year also capturing the Soviet Problem Stake at Los Alamatos in December of 2021. She has now moved on from the Samovars who did way beyond expectations and is still earning money for her new connections.

Her connections Kretz Racing LLC and trainer George Papaprodromou brought this beautifully bred daughter of Curlin along slowly. She finally came into her own in her 4yr old year putting back to back placings in the G2 Santa Margarita and the G2 Santa Maria (beaten the smallest of noses) to G1 winner As Time Goes By. Sadly she came out of that huge effort with a career ending injury and was sold at the 2021 November Fasig Tipton Night of the Stars sale for $425,000 as a broodmare prospect. Best of luck to her new owner Mulholland Springs Farm. Hope you raise a champion out of her!

An easy winner of the 2016 G2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita that win placed him solidly on the Kentucky Derby trail. Sadly for his connections, Derby winning dreams did not play out. After some time off, at 4 he racked up 3 wins including the G2 San Carlos and the G3 Lone Star Park H. Touted as an early choice for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint those dreams were dashed by an injury that brought his career to and end in the summer of his 4yr old year. His dam was purchased at the Keeneland November Breeding stock sale for $50,000 by GVLTS for his breeder Ted Aroney/Halo Farms who raced him in partnership with Jim and Diane Bashor. He began his stallion career at Rancho San Miguel in 2018. Looking forwarding to seeing his progeny race in 2021! Congratulations to all his connections!

Win The Space showed potential all along, enough that he was shipped to Oaklawn Park for a try in the G1 Arkansas Derby as a maiden off of two 3rd place finishes. He ran credibly, but he, along with the rest of the field that day, were no match for American Pharoah. Bad luck and missteps seemed to haunt him the rest of his 3 yr old year as well as into 4, however he still pulled off a 2nd in the G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita and a 3rd in the G1 Awesome Again Stakes also at Santa Anita. Slated for another year of racing at 5, he was retired after a surgery to repair a splint bone fracture went wrong. It was a fun ride for client Kretz Racing LLC and their trainer George Papaprodromou.  From the last crop of the sire of sires stallion Pulpit, he currently is standing at stud at Milky Way Farm in Temecula California.

WOW what a story she has turned out to be! Purchased by Gayle Van Leer at the 1999 Keeneland November Sale as a Racing or Broodmare prospect for her long time client RL Stable, she successfully continued on her racing career parlaying her 4 previous allowance starts into placing in multiple stakes. Not being breeders at the time, RL Stables chose to sell her privately as a broodmare prospect at the end of her racing career. From there she developed into truly a “blue hen” broodmare for Zayat Stables producing E Z WARRIOR winner of the G3 Hollywood Juvenile Championship S. as well as placing in the G1 King’s Bishop (earned $238,468), A Z WARRIOR who won the G1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park and placed in the G1 Santa Anita Oaks for earning $286,906, then was sold as a broodmare prospect for $1,250,000 in 2011, JOJO WARRIOR winner of the G2 Summertime Oaks and the G3 Torrey Pines S. (earned $396,231) at Del Mar, and J Z WARRIOR stakes winner of $342,123 who was sold in as a broodmare prospect for $1,125,000.  A dream story of a broodmare hands down!

Yes you read that correctly,102 starts! Originally purchased for the La Canada Stable he changed hands multiple times and but finished off his career back with his original trainer, Jack Carava. Retired at age 10 after a remarkable career, you have got to love these kind of horses! He tried every time and usually picked up a check each start.
